  1. Really enjoyed high professional service which Richard provided for me to set up my new bike. I was excited to see all of the numbers on the screen, how is my body operating during cycling. Richard adjust a lot of things on my new Felt B12 bike and I looking forward to start training and keen to watch new high speed and power. Everybody who wants to start training needs to begin from Richard’s fantastic service in order to prevent injures and to get maximum enjoyment from training and racing. Definitely will come back in one year.

  2. Having suffered a poor fit else ware previously and thus lacking confidence in my own set up I went to Freespeed with a friend and sat in on his session. After a very short time it became apparent that Richard had a vast knowledge within this field and an ability to listen to riders needs, goals and feedback as well as guide and pass on that knowledge.

Needless to say I made my own appointment.

My bike fit session at Freespeed by Richard has given me the confidence that I’m getting the most out of both of my bikes. It was quite astounding how another “professional” out there managed to get a fit on a TT bike so wrong. The difference in both comfort and performance post fit by Richard are significant.

I would highly recommend a visit.

  3. I’d been fiddling around with my bike set up for a while and had got to the stage where my mind was beginning to play tricks on me convincing me elements were, incorrectly, right or wrong. It was time to get some professional advice.

Starting with the cleats, every adjustment made helped me sit more comfortably and pedal more efficiently.

Richard was extremely patient, enthusiastic and, in particular, aware of what I needed to get out of the session. He was also very thorough in the science and explanation of the adjustments which I found fascinating.

Of course not all of my cycling issues can be conveniently blamed on bike set up and the session did highlight other flaws in my physical set up and flexibility which was an added general bonus.

Nice to have a summary of the findings sent through afterwards too.

    Highly recommended.

  4. I found Richard at Freespeed through glowing reviews on our Triathlon club’s forum. The reviews were spot on, Richard has an excellent customer focus combined with knowledge and first-hand experience. We looked at the set up on my two road bikes and also discussed the merits of TT bikes. The adjustments were subtle, but the impact significant. Riding today I noticed a positive difference in comfort and efficiency.

    A thoroughly worthwhile investment, thank-you.

  5. I’ve been riding my Colnago extreme-c for a couple of years now. Didn’t expect many changes when I went to see Richard. I was right, very few small changes made, which equated to large improvements in efficiency and ability to hold a given speed over distance.
I find I can now hold a greater top speed for longer than before, and all done a little more comfortably ! It’s these marginal gains that are hard to dial in for yourself.
    Good work Fella!!

    Thanks again, Nick.

  6. What a way to spend a couple of hours pre my first Iron Distance Event. So interesting to understand more about bike and human mechanics on a bike from my time with Richard. Some game changing small adjustments ultimately led to an efficient, comfortable and powerful 112 mile bike leg. Can’t recommend the service enough!

  7. Wonderful way to spend a couple of hours. Not only is Richard M instantly likeable, but thoroughly professional and a treasure chest of information. The bike fit itself is very detailed but also understandable. The change in position feels remarkable, and the triathlon specific fit was comforting. Also, the advice on what Triathlon bike to buy was completely impartial, with a detailed list on which bikes suit your particular geometry.
    Could not recommend more highly.

  8. Excellent service from Richard today, guiding a runner trying to convert into a cyclist into the world of road bike setup. Wouldn’t hesitate to use your services again in the future.

    Many thanks.

  9. The service Richard gave me today was fantastic. He took his time to make sure that everything was perfect and explained everything he was doing, excellent service!!

  10. Richard was great – I wanted somebody to guide me throught the murky world of tri bike fitting and help me choose a first serious tri bike. His advice was impartial, precise and delivered in a very relaxed and friendly environment. Just what i was looking for.

  11. Thanks very much for an eyeopening experience. Amazing how much difference a good fit can be!! I expect you will see me over winter to sort out my position on my road bike!!

    Money well spent.

    Thanks again

  12. Being in my first season of competiting in triathlons I found it massively beneficial to be working with an expert and professional who understood my needs and was able to work with me to set my new bike up. The set up was optimised for both road and aero position. I logged a personal best time in the Portsmouth Triathlon two days after the fit and both the cycle leg and my energy levels on the run were massively improved due to being in a more comfortable and efficient riding position. Thanks Richard!

  13. A really enjoyable and informative experience coupled with some good advice has led to me ruling out some bikes that I would have considered.

The cash invested in a proper fit has been more than recovered in the saving achieved with an online purchase.

  14. Absolutely great! Definitely would recommend it to anyone. You can be sure you are with a professional! Very friendly.. Just loved that experience!

    Thanks a lot!

  15. Expensive, but worth it. Excellent friendly & comprehensive service by Richard. No more knee pain now. My position on the bike is improved and everything feels balanced. Very glad I sought help before the knee pain developed into a bad injury. Highly recommended.

  16. Richard is brilliant. As I was new to cycling he took time to look for and advise me as to the right frames for an ambitious beginner. The bike fits me perfectly.

Richard’s knowledge is second to none and his friendly approach make the sessions really enjoyable.

    Highly recommended.

  17. Brilliant service!
Richard improved my postion on the bike so much it eradicated a shoulder problem I had been seeing a physio about for the best part of a year almost overnight. He also helped me achieve my Ironman goal.
His wealth of knowledge that makes the whole session really enjoyable for anyone with a love of bikes.
    Highly recommended.

  18. Freddie Liversidge

I went to Richard after reading some reviews on his website. Everything was completely true, he did an amazing job.

It took a lot of time to dial me in, but Richard was willing to take the time to get it right. Really appreciated it was amazing.

  19. Richard is a very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable guy who takes his time and explains exactly what he is doing and why he is doing it. He will ask you your aims and objectives and fit you to the bike depending on your needs.

The biggest thing for me is I can now just concentrate on training and can stop worrying whether I’m in the perfect riding position (no more excuses!).

Richard also found that I’m not sitting perfectly square on the bike. I now make a conscious effort to sit straight and use the power in my legs equally.

Value for money wise you may find this is the most cost effective way of going faster!

  20. Have been planning on upgrading from a hybrid bike to a road bike for some time but had no idea where to start. Richard was extremely helpful and professional. Now feel I can shop with confidence and be comfortable with what I end up buying.

    Thanks for all your help.

  21. Richard was fantastic, clearly knew exactly what he was doing and most importantly was enthusiastic, taking the time to get it right rather than rushing.

Very impressed with the results of taking my ‘almost right – but definitely uncomfortable’ position to something that is now race ready. It is amazing what difference a few small changes make.

    Thank you!

  22. I gave Richard a challenge to try to make me as comfortable as possible on my converted TT bike which I use exclusively on the road. Very impressed with the results as already feel more at home and able to spin more efficiently.
    Roll on Ride London.

  23. Had my Retul bike fit this morning.
I have been riding a mountain bike for the past ten years but now need something more suited to my planned LEJOG ride in September (1000 miles in 21 days).
Richard is very user friendly. He has specified sizes and settings and given me a list of manufactures and their models that will allow the correct settings. I can now buy a bike with confidence knowing that I will be comfortable and correctly seated.
I am an elder citizen so comfort is most important.
Thanks Richard – your service was very professional.

  24. I wanted to have a fit done for over a year after getting a new Road Bike, but as it was not a super expensive one I was a little hesitant. After too much lower back pain issues, and problems with numb feet, I found the money and booked in.

From the off Richard was a consumate professional, treating me very much like a pro athlete. He’s diligent, thoughtful, listens and then goes about his business leaving you with a complete sense he knows EXACTLY what he is talking about.

The fit was way more detailed than I thought and although he only made a few small changes, they’ve made a massive difference, and I loved seeing the science right before my eyes.

I’m now riding without lower back pain, around 2 miles an hour quicker, more efficient and the numb feet – well they don’t go numb so quickly.

Massive thanks to Richard, I still fancy trying out those Noble Wheels!

I’ve my eye on a Giant TCR Advanced now, if one comes my way I’ll be back again soon. đŸ™‚

  25. The environment that Richard has created at Freespeed is at once relaxed and highly professional. Richard’s long term involvement in and passion for triathlon and cycling underpin his attention to detail and genuine interest in his work. A Freespeed fitting is a “whole rider” experience rather than just a set of measurements, and I left the studio feeling that every option had been explored to achieve the most effective position possible for my specific racing needs. We had a good time getting there too!

  26. Richard provides a very professional and efficient service. He is easy to talk to and extremely knowledgeable. I am very happy with the improvements he made to my bike and I have learnt things about my riding style that I would never have known without the fitting.

    Many thanks Richard.

  27. I raced today for the first time with my newly fitted bike and I can’t get over the difference — my shoulders and neck don’t hurt at all and I was comfortable and relaxed for 40K in aero. I can easily see how I could do 140 more in that lovely position! Thank you Richard for taking the time to do such a detailed and thorough fit for me. I enjoyed the process and the result and would recommend your services highly. I am looking forward to adding my speedy wheels soon…thanks again.

  28. I have previously had bike fits done in Singapore where I live but was never 100% happy with the result.
After purchasing a new Specialised Shiv late last year which I could not get comfortable on, and with Ironman Japan fast approaching I decided to visit the team at Freespeed for a proper bike fit as I had heard they were pretty good at what they did!!
Richard immediately got to work on making the necessary adjustments whilst explaining his rationale and process along the way, something I had never before experienced.
The result was a vast improvement in my position and the few rides I have done since, I have seen an increase in power output and I feel more comfortable.
If you are in the market for a bike fit, dont look any further, these guys are amazing at their job, knowledgable and friendly too. It was worth the trip from Singapore.

  29. I am doing my first Ironman in Roth this year and my goal is to finish with a smile – before the cut-off time. I experienced some niggles in my upper back and shoulders as well as the lower back during my long training rides and decided to visit Richard at Freespeed to have a look at my bike position.
Richard took all the time to explain to me in detail what he thought about my position and included me in every decision about the changes he made. I felt very comfortable and respected. I look forward to a much more comfortable ride in Roth. Thank you Richard.

  30. Freespeed provide a great service. Richard is a really knowledgeable and helpful guy and worked the session around my bad knee (ACL & ITB syndrome)…he even showed me how I should disassemble my bike afterwards for overseas bike ride.

Would definitely recommend this to relative novices like myself as correct riding position has improved my overall enjoyment and confidence a lot.

Wish I had the session before I got illotibial syndrome from my previous setup.

5 stars from me! Thanks Richard!

  31. After riding a road bike in triathlons for five years it was time to bite the bullet and get a TT bike. Obviously the first port of call was a trip to Freespeed to help narrow down the choice of bikes that is out there.

Jonny got me setup on the sizing rig and found a great TT position for me and from the measurements taken we narrowed things down to a handful of frames. A few emails back and forth whilst I looked at different options and a decision was made.

I bought the bike, then came straight back to Freespeed to ensure the position was right and then I was sent on my way.

A few weeks later I found myself doing Ironman Lanzarote and had the most comfortable 180km ride that I’ve ever had – even with the notorious hills and headwinds! Once the bike leg had finished then I had no trouble getting into my stride for the marathon.

Fast forward again to the other day and I just smashed my previous best bike time at the local Thames Turbo Triathlon sprint race series by well over two minutes over a 14 mile bike course.

    Freespeed = worth every penny.

  32. I needed a fit before buying a tri bike. I offered Richard a challenge in that I have long arms and legs and a short torso, ie the anti TT body!

However Richard soon got to work and having made numerous changes he dialled in a comfortable fit and then recommended to me some frames that I would be able to use. I would have had no idea about which frames work best for me without his input.

All in all worth every penny and I will be going back once I have the frame built up, for final tweaking.

Thankyou very much for your time

  33. I have had my road bike some time and having recently increased my amount of rides and duration I was suffering from pain between my shoulders – and generally not being fast enough!

The session with Richard with what seemed small adjustments has made the world of difference. A much better riding position has stopped the pain and made cycling on my drops so much more comfortable I can do so for longer.

A great service where I also got a lesson on technique thrown in. I cannot recommend highly enough.

    Many thanks

  34. Having previously used the retul system elsewhere, I now appreciate the value of using Freespeed for a truly independent opinion when choosing a frameset.

My race specific position was quickly attained on the rig and then re-adjusted to the exact measurements of suitable frames.

I now have the knowledge which frames I can purchase without fear of them being an ill fit.

Richard analysed the data and had me comfortable within the parameters very quickly. Clearly very skilled in his work, I can highly recommend.

    Many thanks.

  35. One thing I wasn’t expecting from my fit session at Freespeed was how much fun it turned out to be. Richard is so welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable that, even though the two bike fit was well over four hours long, the time flew by.

The follow-up information that Richard sent through was very detailed and I feel really happy with the changes that we made to both my bikes. He didn’t slavishly follow the data that the Retul system generated but used it as a tool to inform the discussion between us. I felt properly involved in the process rather than just the engine of a machine that was being tinkered with by a mechanic!

The proof of the pudding is in the eating though and I’m pleased to report that on my first ride out on the road bike since the fit I knocked over 30 seconds off my Richmond Park lap time. Thanks Richard!

  36. I had a bike fit session with Richard on Monday. I cannot speak highly enough of his professionalism and knowledge.
He used the Exit bike system to determine my optimum position taking into account a serious injury I am recovering from. With this information he then made reccomendations as to which frame I should buy to be as comfortable and efficient as possible.

The service which Freespeed provide is fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

  37. A great bike fit experience with Richard on Saturday. The tweaks he made to my bike, notably with the handlebars, and the advice he gave me will improve my cycling enjoyment for a long time.

  38. I had a fit with Jonathan in January and after explaining some of the issues I was having with my bike, most notably descending, he got to work with improving my set up. The changes he made were subtle but have increased my confidence, speed and overall bikehandling measurably. It has also improved my overall comfort on the back leading to less issues with back pain which I have suffered from previously.

I found the guys professional and enthusiastic and would recommend this service to anyone who wants to improve their cycling.

  39. Malcolm Springett

I wanted a bike fit to make sure my bike and I were well fitted to each other for my attempt at the Etape du Tour this summer (2013). Richard was great starting with looking at me with an osteopath’s type of eye. Then some measurements were made using the motion capture gear both at normal pace and at hard working pace. Richard guided me through the results and then made some changes to the bike and things improved. Richard also showed me some tricks to changing my riding position like riding as if my knees were gripping the crossbar – this improved my pedaling. Also rotating my elbows made my shoulders lower which was better.

All in all a great session and Richard was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. More than happy to recommend his services

  40. Had my bike Retul fitted before, but the fitting is only as good as the fitter… and Richard proved that! A few little tweaks here and there, a new stem, and suddenly my three hour ride in the aero position is powerful AND comfortable.

If yours isn’t, come here. I’ve never met a fitter that knows bikes, people and triathlon as well as Richard.

  41. I had been suffering from knee pain during longer cycles as well as not generating the power that I felt I should be, certainly not in an efficient manner. The difference after the fitting is astounding. An infinitely better riding position, no knee pain and sustainable speed. Thanks Richard!

  42. I’ve come to triathlon from a running and swimming background and have always found cycling to be very intimidating. My bike is entry level but I didn’t want to upgrade until I felt I had earned some stripes with understanding the sport.

After 3 hours with Richard I have a far better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, I’m in a better position on my bike and I know the upgrade I am looking for.

Richard was a fountain of knowledge and very happy to start at the beginning and explain the basics. It was a very worthwhile session.

    Thanks Richard!

  43. I have been cycling for 1 year and always felt there is room for more and although I tried several bikes and knew plenty about bike fitting, muscle groups, power transfer I was not fully connected and confident.

Richard is everything you want in a sport this complex: a skilled, enthusiastic person that inspires a lot of confidence.

I am trained in medicine and the physiology and movement principles are well known to me, however I have never been able to put everything together and to good use.

Upon researching the Retul system a lot of people say that it can only be as good as the person fitting you on your bike and that is why I would always highly recommend Richard. It was like going to a doctor for cyclist and bikes together.

This fit is worth every penny, it’s been only a few days but I already broke a lot of my PRs and most importantly I am more relaxed and can go for 100 miles without any pain.

  44. I only got into cycling 4 years ago and it has taken me this long to get my first carbon bike. I thought it would make sense to fit it properly and Freespeed was recommended to me by a friend who had also had a great experience. At 44 years old, I am not going to be competing in races any time soon but I did want to make sure I was getting the most out of my new bike.

Richard made me feel relaxed about the whole experience and despite my amateur status and grey hair, looked after me extremely well. He is a natural enthusiast, almost as excited as I was about my new bike.

My bike had an integrated seat post which needed cutting and he approached the process with a care one would expect from someone who owned the bike himself. He helped explain the bike’s mechanics and taught me a great deal over the course of the three hours I was with him.

This was a thorough, enjoyable and informative session, run by an extremely knowledgeable man who treated a novice like a pro. I got my measurements and fitting dimensions sent the following day in a file, so if anything gets knocked out of place, I can re-set things.

Thanks Richard, great value and I would warmly recommend your company to others.

  45. Having never ridden a TT bike and not really having much knowledge of the differences between the plethora of TT bikes out there, Richard at Freespeed was recommended to me as a good step to help guide me through the bike buying process.

I spent a thoroughly enjoyable morning with Richard. He is extremely knowledgeable and as well as finding the perfect fit and explaining what all the data meant, he also gave me lots of advice about cycling and triathlon. The fit involved an assessment of my flexibility, a look at my bike shoes and cleats as well as all the moving elements of the bike itself.

I had feared that riding a TT bike would be uncomfortable at first but would be just something I would have to get used to, however Richard showed that with the correct fit, it can feel incredibly comfortable. The fit itself was extremely comprehensive and tailored to my quite varying requirements – Richard explained how I would want to change my position to be able to use the same bike for Sprint distance through to Ironman.

I have a back injury that I am managing and Richard was able to explain the data clearly to me so that I understand how I can change elements of my set up should my injury flare up to enable me to continue cycling without causing me problems.

He then speedily sent me a folder of documents showing the data and images from the session. He also provided great advice on which bikes would be suitable for my needs.

It is an excellent service, well worth the money and I would absolutely recommend Freespeed to others. I look forward to going back there in the future with new bikes!

  46. Having only really been back on a road bike for about three years and completed a couple of middle distance TRI’s decided to give the big one a go and signed up for an Ironman. Getting a proper bike fit seemed like the next step.

Was warmly welcomed by Jonathan and spent an enjoyable afternoon being carefully coached through the fitting itself and provided with other advice and tips to assist with my riding technique. My road bike was set up along with a set of new TRI bars and both positions logged and marked (including cleats.)

The service hasn’t ended there as Jonathan has been happy to reply with further advice to my novice queries.

Overall, excellent experience and service; highly recommend.

  47. As a newcomer, with the best part of 20 years since any serious cycling, I wasn’t sure how much difference a professional fit would make but at 6’5″ and 95kg it seemed sensible to try and get the most of out of my bike and prevent any potential injuries.

Jonathan was extremely patient and knowledgeable, providing training hints and tips well beyond the remit of the bike fit itself.

After an assessment of my own physical flexibility, the fit itself was detailed and tailored to my ambitions (sportive standard). In the end we changed saddle height and angle, cleat position, bar angle (which also involved moving the hoods) and flipped the stem. The attention to detail was impressive.

The difference is immense. I’m travelling substantially further, faster, with no additional effort and certainly no aches or pains.

I’d recommend a professional fitting to any keen cyclist, even a recreational one like me, and Freespeed is definitely the place to go!

  48. I’ve always found Richard and Freespeed’s service uber professional and very responsive to athlete requirements in the context of bike fitting for both training and racing. As a team rider and pro athlete I’ve found huge benefit from regular Retul fitting over the years for a specific purposes (IM racing), bike type and more recently for injury related tweakes to positioning after a serious bike accident. The process of refining and improving a functional riding position, using an expert eye and movement data feedback is unsurpassed in improving cycling performance

  49. Having had a bike fit a few years ago as well as getting a new TT toy it was time again to get checked out. I have known Richard (and Jenny) through triathlon and friends for a while but this is the first time I have used Freespeed. As expected (and all reports I had been given) Richard was a rockstar and even though we spent most of a Saturday afternoon together he was more than happy to continue working after our time was up to get it right and took on a special project for me after hours. Above and beyond mate… here’s to another 10 IMs with fast wheels and straight lines with Freespeed’s help!!

  50. Alastair Humphreys

I learned more about bike fitting in two hours than in 46,000 miles of cycling round the world!

Highly recommended for anyone serious about cycling more efficiently.
